    Rayful Edmond III probably is the most notorious drug dealer in Washington, D.C. history. In the early 90's when he was arrested for running a criminal enterprise the trial riveted the area. From news accounts he started drug dealing at an early age - in fact his entire family has a history of organized criminal activity dating back to the fifties. I read a newspaper account that claimed he was bagging cocaine for his father at the tender age of 3.

    This docudrama uses news clips, interviews with Edmond associates and undercover cops, televised interviews with Edmund himself, and reenactments to tell Edmond's life story. For the most part it is okay but the choice of music is sometimes questionable and the arrest scene staged for this film was a bit silly and overblown.
    This docudrama appears to be told from the point of view of Rayful Edmond. It tries to make Edmond out really not to be that bad of a guy. His associates describe him as a peaceful, fun loving guy throwing money around to all his friends and neighbors. For example, he settled a violent gang war because it was hurting both his business and the rival gang's. And all those witnesses schedule to appear at this trial that got murdered? That was somebody else not Edmond! Give me a break! This guy had connections to the Columbian drug lords and was crafty enough to broker drug deals from jail. I find it incredulous to claim he didn't have anything to do with witnesses getting knocked off or that he wasn't part of all the violence that gripped DC because of drugs in the late `80s and early `90s (and still does today).

    "Uncovered - The Whole Truth about the Iraq War" is a chilling exposé of the lies upon which the war on Iraq is based. This DVD reveals that the idea for war against Iraq came to the Bush administration on September 11th, 2001. They realized that the fear instilled in the US population by the terrorist attacks in New York and DC would be a wonderful way to mobilize the US population for war against Iraq. The only thing necessary was a justification, so they decided to mislead the US population into believing that Osama bin Laden and Saddam are partners, and that Iraq had nuclear capabilities that they planned to soon use against us. As this DVD reveals, these were all lies.
    br> Most of the lies are by now well-known to those of us who were opposed to the war from the beginning: there are no weapons of mass destruction, Iraq was not gearing up for war with the US, Saddam and bin Laden are not partners and in fact opposed one another. But this documentary is still interesting because it contains the interviews of many people who have worked within the governmental and military system for decades, such as: former Ambassador Joe Wilson; weapons inspectors Scott Ritter and David Albright; anti-terrorism expert Rand Beers; former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, former CIA operative Robert Baer; and Washington editor of The Nation, David Corn. It's fascinating for me to see footage of people who are within the system, believe in the system, and yet are willing to come forward and speak out against Bush and the war on Iraq. For example, John Dean, former White House counsel, comments on the lies Bush told to Congress about Iraq's nuclear capabilities, explaining that it is a federal felony, a crime, to distort information that you present to congress.

    I was also struck by the juxtaposition of archival footage, gleaned from a variety of talk shows and public addresses, of Bush, Powell, Rice, and other White House representatives, telling their lies and uttering their buzz words and catch phrases. Asking such ridiculous questions as, "Why should we wait for that smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud?" During the buildup to war I had avoided watching such addresses, (because I knew it was all nonsense) so it is interesting to now see such footage. It is so easy to see how all these appearances were scripted. Bush, Rice, Powell, and company, all come across as robots, shells of human beings. It made me wonder what it was like to lie to a nation, the entire world even, knowing that your lies would result in the deaths of thousands: about 10,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed, and nearly 700 US soldiers have since been killed. It's a chilling thing to imagine. I don't know how they can sleep at night.

    The documentary closes with some wonderful commentary on patriotism and all the propaganda we heard that those of us who oppose the war are traitors, that if you oppose the war then you are not supporting the troops. Milt Bearden, former CIA Station Chief in Pakistan with 30 years of service, comments that unlike just about anyone who holds office in the US, he has two sons who served in the military and even went into combat. In Mr. Bearden's words, "I don't have to take any such nonsense on this. And I won't."

    Eyes on the Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads , is a monumentally successful video achievement. With eyewitness accounts, archival film footage, government documents, and excellent retrospect interviewing, Eyes on the Prize II chronicles the African-American's human rights struggle in the United States from 1965 to 1985. This struggle, referred to as "the movement," is examined through eight individual episodes of approximately one hour each.
    Each episode critically examines a combination of topic, issue, individual, or organization, and the effect each element had on the momentum and direction of the civil rights movement. These programs not only seize the opportunity to explore many of the movement's traditional aspects (marches, boycotts, voting, organized protests, etc.), they take reportage two steps further. The aggressive coverage of events rarely discussed makes this series a truly meritorious accomplishment.

    Part 2: America at the Racial Crossroads 1965-1985

  • Episode 9 - Power! (1967-1968) Shows blacks taking control of their communities using ballot boxes, streets and schools as dominant platforms. Carl Stokes is elected the first black mayor of a major city and the Black Panther Party is formed in Oakland.
  • Episode 10 - The Promised Land (1967-1968) Examines the movement's increasing concern with economic issues. In the midst of organizing a Poor People's Campaign march in Washington D.C., Dr. King is called away to help striking workers in Tennessee. On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated.
  • Episode 11 - Ain't Gonna Shuffle No More (1964-1972) Looks at the refusal of blacks to continue to conform to traditional stereotypes. A new generation begins to define itself, led by a greater sense of pride and awareness of its roots, culture and values.
  • Episode 12 - A Nation of Law? (1968-1971) Uncovers the levels of police harassment and brutality targeted at young black activists. At the same time inmates at New York's Attica prison organize a takeover in an effort to publicize intolerable conditions. For many, Attica becomes symbolic of prison conditions nationally.
  • Episode 13 - The Keys to the Kingdom (1974-1980) Chronicles the relationship between the law and popular struggles, and the efforts to inject substance into promises of equality. The movement's focus is on the keys to the kingdom: jobs and education.
  • Episode 14 - Back to the Movement (1979 To Mid-1980's) Concludes the series with an examination of the social and political changes that occurred in two cities - one Southern, one Northern - more than a decade after the civil rights movement.
