The idea of this film was to create a project for Diana Ross where she would not have to sing a single note in it like she did in "Lady Sings The Blues", and the focus would be on her acting skills. Diana did, however, sing the theme song ("Do You Know Where You're Going To") for the movie. With Motown CEO Berry Gordy, Jr. in the director's chair (the original director, Tony Richardson, quit after Gordy's constant meddling), Ross portrays Tracy, a secretary/aspiring fashion student who has dreams of making it big and getting out of the Chicago ghetto where she lives. She is very convincing as well...very diva-ish and overdramatic. Anthony Perkins' role as the deranged Sean (aka Norman Bates turned a jealous and possessive high-fashion photographer) is clearly the best role in the entire film. He helps Tracy get in the business as a model, but only sees her as a product and doesn't want to nurture her need to be independent or her true desire to be a designer. This is where these two constantly bump heads throughout the film. Perkins steals this film and was predictably humorous but also very creepy, especially when he has a confrontation with Billy Dee Williams at a party and reveals himself to be totally psychotic. 20 Movie Boxed Set 1. "Moon of the Wolf" - Made For TV, decent werewolf film with The Fugitive's David Janssen. 2. "Sisters of Death" - Maybe made for TV. Not sure. 3. "Dominique is Dead" - So-so Made for TV starring Cliff Robertson. 4. "Messiah of Evil" - Weird, but fairly good zombie film. 5. "Devil's Nightmare" - I actually had this on VHS under the title "The Devil Walks At Midnight". DVD includes cannibal-erotic "hostess" writhing all over 2 nude cannibal women as they introduce the film. Must have been from some previous video release. The film is very good, but the vampire/cannibal beginning just needs to be skipped. 6. "Cathy's Curse" - Too bloody for it to be Made for TV (at least I think it is). Disappointing movie that really doesn't go anywhere. The mother is just annoying. 7. "Horror Hotel" - A black and white Christopher Lee film. Very gothic. Reminded me a lot of "Black Sunday" by Mario Bava, except this film is about witchcraft. 8. "God told Me To" - Very interesting premise devolves into some sci-fi mind-job. Watch and decide. 9. "Deep Red" - Underappreciated Dario Argento movie. Thick Argento atmosphere, bloody and weird. 10. "Christmas Evil" - Worst.. Christmas... Horror... Movie... Ever... 11. "Don't Look In The Basement" - My wife and I made the mistake of watching this one first. It made her not want to watch any of the others. Just boring, not scary. 12. "Satanic Rites of Dracula" - Worse Christopher Lee Dracula movie I have ever seen. I can't believe Peter Cushing agreed to this movie either. 13. "Web of the Spider" - So-so. More proof that Klaus Kinski was one of the freakiest horror stars ever. 14. "Circus of Fear" - More Christopher Lee and Klaus Kinski. Ok movie, but it's like they wanted to keep the actual plot a secret from you. Very muddy. 15. "House on the Edge of the Park" - If you have seen "Last House on the Left", you have pretty much seen this. This even has David Hess playing virtually the same character as he did in "Last House". 16. "Jack the Ripper" - Klaus Kinski as Jack. Very gory movie. If you try and forget that NOTHING in the movie corresponds to the actual Ripper murders, it's a decent movie. 17. "Die Sister Die" - Not my cup of tea. Very slow and boring. 18. "Lady Frankenstein" - Another instance where they use the name of a famous film to push a bad movie on you. 19. "The Werewolf & The Vampire Woman" - I saw this movie at the drive-in when I was a kid (snuck in). This is a VERY good movie! Very gothic, great vampires, fantastic werewolf. This print of murky and the film has been heavily editted. No nudity in it now, but when it was at the drive-in it was practically x-rated. 20. "Wolfman" - decent werewolf movie hampered by the worst actor in history. He was the producer though which is how he got the job. Sure, this collection is a mixed bag, but WELL worth the cost. Lots of entertainment for the cost of one new release big budget 2-hour over-produced movie. "The Black Gestapo" is a mean, nasty race-riot of a movie. A benevolent police group, the People's Army, attempts to aid the citizens of Watts, who are being terrorized by what appears to be a mob of bitter appliance salesmen. There's dissention in the army's ranks, however, and a splinter group made up of local criminals forms to run the white mob out of Watts (one wise guy is castrated in his bathtub, another is run off the road by a breast-baring Uschi Digart and shot up by the gang). The mob retreats, but this new People's Army takes their place, shaking down the citizens and having drunken orgies at their new compound (where Ms. Digart shows up again in the leader's bed). There's not a single one of "The Black Gestapo"'s 88 minutes that's politically correct.

This was the last pairing of Cosby and Poitier in 1977 and watching it, you can easily see where Quentin Tarantino and a lot of other young filmmakers get ideas for plotting, pacing and musical backdrops. The most refreshing thing about the film is that it manages to deliver a message about empowering today's youth without beating you over the head with it's preachiness. Brilliantly scored by the late, great Curtis Mayfield and featuring contributions from The Staple Singers, "A Piece..." perfectly encapsulates it's time without sinking to the depths of 'Blaxploitation' and buffoonery. The terrific all-star cast includes James Earl Jones, the impossibly gorgeous Denise Nicholas matched only by the lovely Tracy Reed, a very young Sheryl Lee Ralph and the soon- to- be- a- star-via-"What's Happening!", Ernest Thomas. One scene is of particualar note: one of the youngsters involved in the job search program, Willie, delivers a powerful, tear-filled monologue about why he has to find a job 'or something, so that he can be a man' that just breaks my heart and lends the film an air of poignance that elevates it above the level of simple comedy. With that said, "A Piece Of The Action" is an all time favorite that contains elements of drama, action & suspense Run Time: 2Hrs 25Mins

Even when it misses a dramatic opportunity in favor of generic action, Set It Off benefits from a sharp understanding of its well-drawn central characters. They're a quartet of young African American women in Los Angeles (Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise), all struggling against a system that seems designed to prevent them from realizing their dreams. The movie establishes their plight with credible attention to emotional detail, making their decision to rob banks believable enough to give the ensuing plot its inevitably tragic momentum. Cowritten by the screenwriter of What's Love Got to Do With It?, the film conveys genuine compassion for its characters, and the ensemble cast is uniformly strong--especially Queen Latifah as a brash lesbian whose fate is as certain as her forceful attitude. Set It Off expresses a real sense that these women have been close friends for years, and that gives the film additional impact, even when their transition to crime and violence feels somewhat forced and superficial. A romantic subplot involving Pinkett and a social-climbing banker (Blair Underwood) is too contrived to be convincing, and director F. Gary Gray (Friday) tries too hard to combine hard-hitting action with social relevance (a weakness shared by Gray's following film, The Negotiator). Still, Set It Off effectively avoids passing judgment; its emotional complexity transcends simple notions of right and wrong, injecting vitality--and a kind of renegade integrity--into the traditions of a familiar plot Starring: Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah Director: F.
