The author tells of his experiences after he darkened his skin and traveled through the South in order to find out how it feels to be black. A reader from Arizona write's: If you question the civil rights movement or anything pertaining to racial bias, you should read this book. It is a clear example from first hand knowledge about how an African American man is treated in the deep south during the civil rights movement. The historical and emotional aspect of this book makes it one of the best books I have ever read and this should be required reading for ALL high schools in the U.S.

  • I gave this book 5 stars, not that I feel everything in the book is true, but because she hit on some major points that all races need to realize.
  • The truth is we are a very sick society and we are constantly feeding off one another's sick energy and it is time to stop or we will eventually destroy ourselves.
  • Her discourse on symbolism and her use of intuition in deciphering the facts made me like this book even more.
  • There is a lot of false information fed into our subconscious minds on a day to day basis whether on an individual, group and/or culture scale that yes!!! it does make so much sense that we carry around these subconsciously ill feelings that we pass to our children, our children's children and so on, without even knowing it!
  • Thank you so much Frances for your intuitive insights, for the most part I do believe you hit the nail on the head.
  • I don't believe any intelligent person should be offended by this book whether Black, White or Homosexual.
  • Just cut through some of her words and try to reach out to her ideas and concepts.

From Columbus to Castro: The History of the Caribbean is about 30 million people scattered across an arc of islands -- Jamaica, Haiti, Barbados, Antigua, Martinique, Trinidad, among others-separated by the languages and cultures of their colonizers, but joined together, nevertheless, by a common heritage. For whether French, English, Dutch, Spanish, Danish, or-latterly-American, the nationality of their masters has made only a notional difference to the peoples of the Caribbean. The history of the Caribbean is dominated by the history of sugar, which is inseparable from the history of slavery; which was inseparable, until recently, from the systematic degradation of labor in the region. Here, for the first time, is a definitive work about a profoundly important but neglected and misrepresented area of the world

An illustrated history written and designed to look like the old Ripley's Believe it or Not texts (which Rogers read). Highlights the accomplishments (with accurate portraits) of black men and women. Excellent for pre-teens or middle school age children. This is a hard to find book, and even harder to keep.

    Brand Name:  William Loren Katz
    Item # / SKU:  2569
The American West: no period in our history has defined and shaped us more as a nation. Unique to the U.S., the Old West exerts a power on the American imagination that can still be seen in almost every aspect of our culture. Sadly, as is the case with most other periods, historic acknowledgment of the African American contribution to the West is either totally nonexistent or nowhere near complete. In The Black West, historian William Loren Katz corrects the record in words and pictures, showing that, from the journeys of Lewis and Clark to the charge at San Juan Hill, African American men and women exerted an influence beyond their numbers in the discovery and definition of the American West.
