Once upon a time in Harlem there was a man named, John Williams that single-handedly conspired and plotted to eliminate all of his competition on the uptown streets. Through the use of brute force and calculated moves, he was able to control all illegal activity from numbers to the drug trade. John was an intelligent thinker, manipulative and cunning. And as those that crossed him would find out, he was a cold-blooded killer as well. But, John wasn't always that man. When he moved from South Carolina with his younger brother Sam, he had dreams of escaping the racism that was prevalent in the south, in order to provide a better life for his family. But, what he quickly found out was that racism still existed in the north, and the opportunity well had also dried up. With his back against the wall and no money in his pockets, John concocted a scheme to rob a local hustler-that went horribly wrong. Blood was now on his hands...and a price was on his head. The events that transpire from that moment on will have John and Sam pitted against some of Harlem 's most notorious gangsters. With their lives on the line, sacrifices will have to be made. John has dreams of providing a better life for his family, but at what cost? Will he and Sam be lured in by the sex, drugs, money and other dangers of the uptown streets? Only time will tell. Once upon a time in Harlem.

  • A large part of Goines' thirty nine years of life was spent being a successful pimp, a theif, an operator of corn liquor houses, an armed robber, and a small time dope dealer.
  • He lived the life of the streets and out of that experience he created Prince, the anti-hero of Black Gangster! It's the story of the shocking underworld of black organised crime and the fledgling black "godfather" who goes from teenager ganglord to powerful Detroit mobster. Like the gangsters of the 1920's, he begins with boot-legging and branches out into every known crime

    Item # / SKU:  2739
This is a very quick read. Iceberg Slim is a good writer and really get's you immersed. This is alternately described as fiction and non-fiction. After reading it, I can see why. I'm sure it is the author's real story of his life, and a view into his world. On the other hand, as a pimp, he has a pension for exaggeration. In some passages, you start to question if what he's saying is really possible. I think that's the reason the book contains the little disclaimer about it being a work of fiction. Nonetheless, it is a fascinating glimpse into the psychology of pimps and prostitutes and surprisingly informative. The slang is from the 20's and 30's and kind of hard to understand sometimes, but the book includes a handy glossary. Pimp is both a page turner, and a significant work. I'd highly recommend it.

  • Goines' classic novel of prison life, it has been called "one of the most revealing books ever written about prison life and the bigotry built into the system."
  • This is the story of Chester Himes, who thought he was the baddest man to come down the street. Behind prison walls he was nothing more than fresh meat.

    Brand Name:  Sister Souljah
    Item # / SKU:  6841
Debut novel by hip-hop rap artist Sister Souljah, whose No Disrespect (1994), which mixes sexual history with political diatribe, is popular in schools country-wide. In its way, this is a tour de force of black English and underworld slang, as finely tuned to its heroine's voice as Alice Walker's The Color Purple. The subject matter, though, has a certain flashiness, like a black Godfather family saga, and the heroine's eventual fall develops only glancingly from her character. Born to a 14-year-old mother during one of New York's worst snowstorms, Winter Santiaga is the teenaged daughter of Ricky Santiaga, Brooklyn's top drug dealer, who lives like an Arab prince and treats his wife and four daughters like a queen and her princesses. Winter lost her virginity at 12 and now focuses unwaveringly on varieties of adolescent self-indulgence: sex and sugar-daddies, clothes, and getting her own way. She uses school only as a stepping-stone for getting out of the houseafter all, nobody's paying her to go there. But if there's no money in it, why go? Meanwhile, Daddy decides it's time to move out of Brooklyn to truly fancy digs on Long Island, though this places him in the discomfiting position of not being absolutely hands-on with his dealers; and sure enough the rise of some young Turks leads to his arrest. Then he does something really stupid: he murders his wife's two weak brothers in jail with him on Riker's Island and gets two consecutive life sentences. Winter's then on her own, especially with Bullet, who may have replaced her dad as top hood, though when she selfishly fails to help her pregnant buddy Simone, there's worsemuch worseto come. Thinness aside: riveting stuff, with language so frank it curls your hair.

Goines' powerful first novel lays bare the bloody, brutal world of crime in the black ghetto, where, as Goines put it, "kindness was the sweetest con of all." Here is the gusty and often shocking world of Billy and Jackie, prison buddies on the streets and hot on the trigger.

slim gets, real in this very personal, who said slim cries too much, the man was just remeniscing over events of his life, especially the life of a black man trapped in the darkworlds of the underworld, berg describes the hell every black man must go through,in his excistence-pure hell, he describes what a pimp must do to stay ahead of the game, i liked how he told that young dude the real deal about pimping, and that he has tremendous odds against him, yes kiddies not anyone can be a pimp, do not let bet,or mtv, fool you learn the real deal before you get shot-like iceberg warned that particular fellow, who learned that a good whore is always in demand as some italian quickly scooped his girl, then the letter slim wrote to his daddy was deep, then we learned about melvin x, the black panthers, who slim called heroes, there's holly one of berg's old associates who became famous and forgot whewre her roots were, what really got me interested was the uncle tom issue, and how whites create this type of character in america he said the word hope is used to control the blacks of america, then i liked the way berg wrote of why white women date black men, we all heard about those old black penis myth-but this is bryond that, and how black women really deal with white johns in the street, who love critizing, and trying to outlaw prostitution, drugs but are the biggest freaks in america i will not say the names of those who puff and not inhale, or claim that they are somebody, but this is reality, the truest black book ever made besides the nigger bible, definetly a must have, then i like the weay berg adressed that young writer, about what kind of writer he wants to be, and even that berg writes he still catches hell.

This book represents the drug game during the late 80's from the inner city streets of Philadelphia. The main characters, Gena and Quadir find themselves caught in the vicious, yet seductive world of drugs and money. Quadir a millionaire drug dealer flipping kilo after kilo, builds a massive money empire. He, however, is also faced with the art of extortion brought upon by the notorious junior mafia. She, however, is faced with holding onto her man, her house, her car and the money. This is our life, these are our streets and this book represents our losses, our gains, our sorrows and joys. With the good, always comes the bad and when you play in this game you have to count the highs and the lows. When you deal with loss after loss, when the people closest to you are gunned down, when the people closest to you are millionaires from hustling in the drug game, when you live this life and have everything money can buy, the price is too often life in return. It's so hard to think about the bad when it's all good. It's so hard to think about the sacrifices that will be made so the next can eat, so the next can come up, so the next can survive to tell about it. We at MMP thank the massive support from the brothers locked up, the massive support from the streets, and if we never make it on a book shelf the hustle was the real. We at MMP promise to never forget you, never forget the hustle and always represent. This one is for the streets.
