When 5-HTP is taken orally, it enters the brain and helps the brain make additional serotonin when needed. 5-HTP has been used in a variety of clinical studies around the world looking at the treatment of depression. In most of the studies, the 5-HTP worked as well as some antidepressant medications. 5-HTP has also been used in studies to relieve anxiety, enhance sleep, suppress appetite, control fibromyalgia symptoms, and prevent migraine headaches. As with many of the antidepressants mentioned above, 5-HTP has been found to be very helpful for many women who have Premenstrual Tension Syndrome (PMS) by controlling irritability, mood swings, food cravings (especially carbohydrates - sugars and starches), and poorly controlled appetite. However, even though 5-HTP sounds impressive, you should never replace or change your current medication without consulting your primary health care provider first.

Also, the dosage of 5-HTP can vary greatly between individuals. In fact, some physicians recommend starting at relatively high doses for more immediate results and decreasing the dose based on any side effects. Usually, however, physicians suggest that patients start at about 75 to 150 mg. and note any response over the first 3-4 weeks. If necessary, the dose of 5-HTP may be increased by 75-150 mg. every 1-2 weeks until a positive effect is noted or side effects are too great. Obviously, women using 5-HTP for PMS may need to adjust the dose slowly as they observe their monthly response and symptom relief. In studies, daily doses up to 900mg have been safely used, but few people need higher than 600 mg.
