Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. It is made from another amino acid and has been used in the treatment of a variety of medical disorders such as arthritis, autoimmune diseases, types of intestinal dysfunction, peptic ulcers, and several connective tissue diseases. Glutamine is the only amino acid metabolized in the brain and is frequently referred to as "brain food"; consequently, it is often given in the treatment of a variety of behavioral disorders. Sources: Natural sources include raw spinach and parsley as well as other vegetables and animal proteins. However, cooking quickly destroys glutamine. Deficiency symptoms and illnesses: Rarely a problem.Effects on the body: Helps rid the body of toxic waste ammonia. It helps to build and maintain muscle. Glutamine also enhances the formation of another amino acid, gammaaminobutric acid (GABA), which is essential for proper brain function and normal mental activity. Use in weight control: Helps to build and maintain muscle mass, especially during dieting. Also, glutamine helps reduce sugar and carbohydrate cravings. Possible adverse effects: Since glutamine is involved in helping the liver detoxify wastes, individuals with liver or kidney disease (cirrhosis, Reye's syndrome etc.) should not take glutamine. Doing so may increase the level and accumulation of ammonia.
Usual dose: 1 capsule in the morning on an empty stomach. May be increased to 3 per day, ½-1 hour before meals.
